Spokane Men, Lane Women Through Day 1 of 2026 NWAC Track & Field Championships

GRESHAM, Ore. - The Spokane men's track and field team and the Lane women's track and field team lead overall through Day 1 of the 2026 NWAC Track & Field Championships on Monday at Mt. Hood Community College.

The Sasquatch men lead significantly with 85 points through day one, much on the strength of their field competitors who won three of four events on Monday. They are followed by Lane with 44 points and Umpqua with 27.

Jediah Darrell scored 20 points on the day as he won both the hammer throw and the discus. After taking second place in 2025 in the hammer, Darrell dominated the competition with a mark of 58.29 meters. He then followed up with his second-straight title in the discus, hitting 48.23 meters.

Jalen Brightful won the long jump with a personal best of 7.00 meters on his first attempt.

On the track, Jacob Nicholls won the 3,000-meter steeplechase for Spokane with a personal best time of 9:43.62.

In other men's events, Treasure Valley's Brayden Lamanna won the 10K with a time of 30:48.62. The men's pole vault finished the day with an exciting competition as seven of the 11 vaulters finished with personal bests, led by Lane's Kyle Hughes who took first place at 5.10 meters. Hughes had already won the competition with a PR as he reached new heights, tying for the third best mark in NWAC history.

The Lane women showcased their strength on day one with 68 total points, but are closely followed by Spokane with 62 and Umpqua with 48. 

The Titans had the top-three finishers in the pole vault, led by Isabella Abrahams' first place finish as she reached 3.81 meters. 

Clackamas' Zowie Nunes won the women's javelin throw with a mark of 43.10 meters as the Cougars had three of the top four in the event.

Umpqua won a pair of events including the long jump as Amina Mulendela hit a personal best mark of 5.53 meters to claim the title. On the track, Aunika Miller started the day with a win in the 10K with a time of 39:47.16. 

Southwestern Oregon picked up a win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as Taylor Dickey, the 2025 women's cross country champion, won with a time of 11:36.77.

Joy Assonken picked up the Spokane women's team's first individual victory as she won the shot put with a mark of 13.75 meters. Assonken won the event for the second straight season.

The NWAC Championships resumes on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. with the women's hammer throw. The running events begin on the track and 12 p.m. with the 4x100 relays.
