Skagit Valley Earns First Trip to Championship Since 1992 with 92-73 Win Over Rival Edmonds
PASCO, Wash. — Skagit Valley earned its first trip to the NWAC Championship game since 1992 as they defeated division rival Edmonds 92-73 in Game 14 of the 2026 NWAC Men's Basketball Championship, presented by ICCU, on Friday at Columbia Basin College.
The Cardinals completed a tough feat on Friday by earning a 3-0 season sweep over Edmonds. Facing a team that had two comeback victories already in the tournament, Skagit Valley knew they would have to finish the game with a strong second half after leading 39-30. The Cardinals did just that as they dropped 53 points in the final 20 minutes to hold off the Tritons.
The game began with Malcolm Clark scoring a jumper for the Cardinals at 19:36, assisted by Treyshawn Weatherspoon. Edmonds initially gained a seven-point lead at the 16:19 mark following a 3-pointer by Adonai Daniel. However, SVC's defense intensified, with Jerry Petty, Jr. contributing multiple steals. The Cardinals capitalized on turnovers with Petty scoring a fast-break layup at 9:22, helping the team to a 12-point lead, their largest of the half. By halftime, SVC led the Tritons 39-30, fueled by strong performances in the paint, including 24 points.
SVC secured a decisive victory over Edmonds with a strong second-half performance, outscoring the visitors 53-43 over the final 20 minutes. Jaeger Fyfe led an early surge with three consecutive 3-pointers, expanding the lead to 15 after just a few minutes into the half. Clark added to the offense with multiple key plays, including a layup and a dunk, helping maintain the Cardinals' advantage. Petty added crucial points down the stretch to ensure the SVC's victory.
Petty filled up the stat sheet with 21 points six steals, and five assists, marking three-straight games with 20 points in the tournament. His all-around effort was complemented by Jaeger Fyfe, who added 16 points to the scoreboard, hitting 6 of his 10 shots, including four 3-pointers. Weatherspoon was pivotal with 15 points, nine assists, and three steals. Clark also made his presence felt with 17 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Bennett Howe rounded out the top performers with 11 points and led the team in rebounding with eight boards, while also contributing defensively with 2 blocks.
Adonai Daniel kept the Tritons in the game with his shooting performance, dropping 27 points on 10-for-18 shooting including four 3-pointers. Avidan West added 17 points with four assists, while making 8-of-9 free throw attempts. Kapinos was a force on the boards, leading the team with 10 total rebounds, adding nine points. Hunter White had seven points and nine boards.
Skagit Valley will look to capture its first NWAC title since 1988 on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Columbia Basin College. They take on the defending champions in Lower Columbia. Edmonds finishes an outstanding year with a 20-12 overall record and a Final Four appearance.
